At Edenside we have over 20 year’s knowledge of Breaking and Schooling horses in Fife. We import many young and unbroken horses from Europe which we break and train ourselves. Formal training of a horse usually doesn't start until a horse is about 2 years old, but from the very start a young horse is quite capable of learning the proper way to be around people. Spending as much time as possible with the young horse helps it become accustomed to being around people.
It is important to realize that horses as expected look for a leader to tell them how things should be as this is their normal herd instincts. Our experience has taught us that it seems to work best when the human is the leader. The horse can follow its leader out of fear or respect. You will have a better experience with your horse if he follows your lead out of trust and respect.
When a horse reaches the age of two years, he is ready to be broken to a rider. One of the most important things to remember when working with young horses is to keep calm. From this point on through the breaking experience, the young horse is exposed to new sights, sounds, feelings and expectations. This time is crucial because it decides whether a horse will be an excellent or poor mount. One of the deciding factors in breaking a horse is the method that is used, but most importantly, the person breaking the horse is the key to a good mount.
So whether you require your pony / horse to be broken or just schooled or even some re-schooling at Edenside we believe that a key factor to the successful breaking and schooling of all ponies and horses is time and patience.
